Aman Costigan started on a traditional legal path right out of law school in 2012 and became a partner at the law firm in 2018. But, after years of having a feeling like she wanted more in her life, she decided to take action in 2019 to create a life she loves. She started on a path towards building her own Empire of Freedom by bringing back fun and adventure into her life, starting her own business teaching yoga to lawyers (Beyond Yoga for Lawyers) and taking a chance by investing in a local start-up, all while practicing her favorite kind of law: administrative law, with a focus on professional regulation. Most recently, Aman’s dreams of becoming a mom, being an extra in a Christmas rom-com movie and traveling to Portugal for 6 weeks with her husband and 3 month old son have come true.

In this two-part episode, Aman walks us through how she created a life she loves - the transformation including the mindset she had to adopt and the actions she took.  We delve into what happens when we stop checking boxes, when we stop feeling fulfilled and satisfied, and when we start doing something about it to create a life that feels good to us. Aman also provides a thoughtful list of how she is able to manage everything in her life from being a law firm partner and yoga instructor and founder of Beyond Yoga for lawyers to being a mother of a young son, and everything in between.

Life can be overwhelming.  You might feel like there isn’t enough time for you to take care of yourself or to get time to clear your mind.  You spend so much time and energy on those you love and care about and on your work.  But you matter too.  Your well-being matters and you CAN prioritize yourself just as you prioritize the people you love and all the other important things you do.  In this episode, Arivee shares three steps to how to prioritize yourself too.

In this special two-part episode, Arivee is joined again by previous Humble Rising Podcast guest, Dina Scippa.  Dina is a gender equality specialist-turned certified life coach, and Founder of "Enough Labs". She supports women and girls in coaching on the intersections of leadership and confidence, is a seasoned trainer and facilitator, and is invited to speak regularly on radical self-acceptance, women’s empowerment and being enough. She hosts the internationally charted podcast "Embracing Enough", which showcases the stories of women and girls and their journey to feeling confident. She believes that once women accept the unwavering connection to the fact that they can do what they want to do, feel how they want to feel and be who they want to be in this world – it is then when she’s unstoppable.

In our conversation, Dina and I talk about the thought patterns and beliefs we need to unlearn to love ourselves, truly accept all we are, and become more confident. Often times, women do not celebrate themselves, give themselves credit, or qualify their accomplishments.  It’s difficult for women to feel like they’ve done enough and they are in fact “good enough.”  Dina and I dig deep into this and discuss how women are socialized to people please, to seek approval and validation from others, and how that impacts how we show up, especially at work.  We also delve into what women can do to challenge those beliefs, become more loving and kind towards themselves, and how to step into who they want to be.

Share with a friend who needs to listen to this.  Don’t forget to rate and review this podcast!

JOIN THE UNLEARNING LAB WITH DINA:

Dina says: “The thought patterns I battled for years and the ones my clients were bringing into sessions weren't isolated. Not accidental. Not random. They were a product of all the messages women pick up as girls that teach us how to find praise, validation and approval. How to socialize. How to seek out love. To fit a mold of what women are expected to be, designed by a patriarchal society. It’s high time that women give themselves permission to unlearn those toxic patterns that have been fueling their negative self talk; to give yourself permission to take up space; and to celebrate who you are and everything you’ve been through!”

In The Unlearning Lab, Dina has designed a program with tools to help you fully understand these toxic thought patterns and how you how to finally break free of their hold. You'll also find support, feedback and advice from a group of people who feel like you do right now but are just as ready to make a change. You won't get a quick fix or a magic bullet, but you will take a massive leap into unlocking your self‑acceptance and self‑love - so you can step into your unapologetic energy and take this world by storm. The program is 10 weeks and all you need is 2 hours a week. You will have complete with access to course module videos and reflection exercises that you will have lifetime access to. Plus, weekly group coaching calls with me and other women who are following the courses that go through the three phases. Phase 1: Identifying the Burden (Your Story); Phase 2: Getting to the Core of Who You are (Your Being); and Phase 3: Getting Clarity on the Woman You are Becoming (The Rising).

Lastly, you will have an opportunity to schedule 2 1:1 calls for deeper conversations about your unique unlearning journey; and not to mention peace of mind that you’re not alone and not crazy – just READY!

This is part 2 of a two part episode of my conversation with stress management therapist and coach Joy Langley.  If you didn’t catch Part 1, which is episode 77, go back listen to that one first because this episode is a continuation of that conversation.

Joy Langley is a certified Coach and Stress Management Therapist based in the UK. She is also the author of “Navigating Stress” (released in 2021). In Joy’s view, we all need to recognize the things in life that stress us out, then commit to changing negative emotional patterns, behaviors and thinking habits. Her big mission is to alleviate human suffering. She does this by helping people get back to their “happy” place via transformational coaching and therapy conversations.

The maternal side of Joy’s family have a history of poor mental health. Joy experienced anxiety and depression during her 20s. Then tragically in 2018 her 23yr old son Riaz-Jaye committed suicide (the day after Joy’s birthday), after living with bipolar for longer than he could bear. Joy’s also had more than her fair share of close family bereavements so mental and emotional well-being are a non-negotiable way of life! Joy says  no one should be asked to sacrifice health (burnout), relationships or their sanity because of the rules of their industry or profession.

If there is one thing I’ve learned in the past year is that you must give to yourself just like you give to others. Your tireless work for others including family cannot come at the expense of your well-being. The cost of all the caregiving you do cannot be yourself.  Because before you had children or before you had a partner, you were a person with your own identity. Your own dreams. Your own interests. You had a way to take care of yourself. Becoming a mom doesn’t mean all that gets pushed aside or delayed. It means an evolution of those things. And the transition and being in the throws of motherhood requires us to see ourselves again for who we truly are and take care of ourselves the way we need in this moment. In this episode, I share two steps to getting back to yourself when you’re in the thick of motherhood.

Don’t forget: Your 5-step guide to get clarity and make a change in this season of life

We often jump right into setting goals for a new year in our personal and professional lives. We create New Year’s resolutions. We say we’re starting fresh with new goals and a new outlook. Goal setting and visualizing the life and career you want and deserve can be powerful.

But we rarely take the time to acknowledge and celebrate what we’ve accomplished, what we’ve done, what we’ve learned, who we were able to be, and that we’re still here moving forward despite all the struggles we’ve been through.

So before we get into 2022 goal setting (and maybe your vision board!), this is your opportunity to take this time for yourself and reflect on all you did, all you navigated, how you’ve grown, the changes you made for the better, and how amazing it is that you woke up today with a chance to try again.

Join Arivee for a series of reflection prompts to acknowledge all you did and overcame in 2022.  This is the audio from a webinar recording.

Toya is the founder and CEO of Legally Bold and Woke up Worthy.  She is a coach and career expert, helping attorneys and professional women of color clarify the next steps of their careers so they never feel overworked, underpaid, and unhappy again.

Toya holds a Juris Doctorate from the George Washington University Law School and a bachelor of science in Industrial Engineering from Rutgers University. She is licensed to practice law in New York and New Jersey. After law school, she worked for several years as a city government attorney, a prosecutor, and a solo practitioner before starting Legally Bold.

When she is not helping attorneys and professionals of color as a coach, she can be found loving up on her family and friends, working out, watching any show created by Shonda Rhimes, learning all about the wonder that is natural hair from YouTube university, or enjoying a good book.

In this episode, Toya and I talk about her journey from practicing law in the government space, to owning her own law practice and the depression and burnout she experienced, and what led her to become a coach to attorneys and professionals of color.   Toya and I dig deep into what it truly means to take care of your well-being and face your truth about what you need and want, including if the truth is that you’re not happy with where you’re at.

Elisa Charters is a passionate advocate for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) and the BIPOC community of women. She is a First generation college student, first generation in this country born and raised here.

In 2014, Elisa co-founded Latina Surge National non-profit, an extension of her community work at several organizations for 20+ years.

LSN’s mission is charitable and educational in advancing DEIB; its vision is to achieve parity for women across government, corporate America, and higher education and greater access for small business growth.

In this episode we talk about what it means to be self empowered and to be IN POWER, cultural expectations that can impact how we move through the world particularly in our careers especially as Latinas, women of color, or if you’re first gen – this feeling of not being good enough, the constant push for upward mobility and how sitting still can feel uncomfortable because we are so used to pushing through and trying to achieve that upward mobility for so many reasons (many of which are embedded in our own upbringings and culture and community).  We also delve into the systemic barriers we face and what can be done to address them.  Elisa has her own personal view of what we can do and where our power really lies in breaking down barriers.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a helpful way to frame what your needs actually are at this time in your life. It’s one way we can put language to what we truly need versus everything we say we want and need.  This episode is an invitation for you to explore what your core needs are at this time, and how you can prioritize them from a place of acceptance and surrender instead of resistance, and what you can do to move forward to address them.  Small adjustments practiced more often over time have long lasting, impactful results.

I’m walking you through a self-assessment called Mi Vida Entera/My Entire Life. We’re going to assess specific areas of your life. The purpose of this isn’t to get a complete, perfect picture and rating of every single piece of your life.  It’s an invitation to get more self aware of how you’re really thinking and feeling, how you’re living and experiencing the different areas of your life and what needs to change for you to move closer towards what you need and want in those areas.

Do you find it hard to accept what is and where things stand regarding a particular situation in your life? Do you find yourself resisting it?  You wish things were different, but they aren’t.  And you keep saying “but only if….” or “why does it have to be this way” or “why can’t it be that way” But it’s not that way.  It is what it is.  In this episode, Arivee shares her struggle with accepting a current situation and her go-to strategy for how you can engage in introspection when you’re feeling that resistance, and how to move forward with a fresh perspective.

In this episode, I sit down with attorney, author, and Professor Lourdes to talk about how she pivoted in her career multiple times from being an attorney and working in the financial sector in various roles, to becoming a professor at Boston College.  Lourdes and I discuss the importance of addressing your current state in life and taking the necessary steps to accomplish goals that may once have seemed unattainable.  We discover commonalities in our Dominican upbringing that made it difficult for us to ask for help but reflect on the importance of networking and surrounding ourselves with people that will hold us to our highest potential.

Lourdes' Email: germanL@bc.edu

In this episode, I talk to Accredited Financial Counselor Jessica Medina about leaving her legal career to put work-life integration and her own purpose front and center. Jessica is Dominican and Puerto Rican.  She graduated from Columbia law school as a single mother to twins and with over $200k in student loan debt.  To confront the financial burden she felt after graduating from law school, Jessica worked for a prestigious law firm.  We discuss Jessica’s transition from struggling with money in law school and working for a firm, to representing the federal government, to paving her own path to pursue her love of helping others create feasible financial plans so they can have joyful and fulfilling lives.  We talk about the fear of change and discomfort, and how we can be so aware of something but yet not take action on it until later, and she drops some serious financial wisdom on us too.

My sister and I ended up having our babies 5 days apart this year.  I know - it’s crazy!  So we’re on this journey of newborn motherhood together.  And what a ride it’s been so far.  Recently, she asked me to share what I wish I would’ve known when my first child was born and any advice I’d give to a newborn mom.  I share that advice in this episode.  If you’re a new mom or parent, or if you are helping out a parent with a newborn, this one’s for you.

In this episode, I share a letter I wrote to my first daughter when she was only months old three and half years ago.  I wrote it in my notes app on my phone at 2:30am after nursing her.  I had a lot on my mind and was worried about the world she had been born into.  I needed her to know all the things I wished for her, hoped for her, and the things I wanted her to remember.  Although I knew she couldn’t read it and won’t be able to read it for some years, she will read it one day.  When I re-read this letter, I realized that this isn’t just a letter for my baby girl, this is a letter of what I wish for all girls, especially Black and Latinx girls. And you will likely find (as I did) reminders in it that resonate regardless of how old you are.  #thefutureisfemale

Like you, I love the relaxation I feel when I’m able to indulge and make time for these things.  While those types of pleasurable activities can be part of self-care, it’s nowhere near the whole story.  In this episode, I challenge you to rethink how you define self-care and share key strategies for practicing it, which focuses on what you need during everyday moments and how to give that to yourself.
